OAPA is proud to recognize Abigail Allen, DMSc, PA-C, and her University of Findlay team for recently winning a Be The Change Grant from the nccPA Health Foundation!

According to their mission, "the nccPA Health Foundation equips and empowers Certified PAs and PA students to improve health through grant programs and initiatives that foster the quality and accessibility of health care." The nccPA Health Foundation's Be The Change grant program supports PAs and PA students who design and execute activities that expand access to health promotion, education, and treatment as strategies for fostering more equitable care.

University of Findlay child at health fairEarly childhood caries (ECC) is a preventable yet significant health issue affecting children, particularly in underserved communities. In 2024, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) released the results of its dental health survey, revealing that among the 3,300 third graders surveyed, 20% had at least one untreated cavity, and 48% had a history of tooth decay. In response, the University of Findlay’s Physician Assistant program aimed to address oral health disparities in Hancock County, Ohio, by providing education to local youth.

On Friday, April 11, 2025, the University of Findlay hosted its annual Healthy Kids Day event, a national initiative aimed at improving children's health and well-being. In collaboration with the Findlay Family YMCA, Blanchard Valley Health Systems, and Hancock Public Health, University of Findlay invited families to participate in a variety of fun activities designed to motivate and educate children on developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The event was free and open to the public for children of all ages, reaching more than 250 kids with their message!

University of Findlay health fair 2025The University of Findlay Physician Assistant Student Society (PASS) staffed a booth to promote healthy lifestyles, with a specific focus on providing oral health counseling for children and their parents. By distributing free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss, the students aimed to help prevent cavities and tooth decay. Children’s books were also handed out to help normalize dental care as a part of their preventative health screenings. The students also utilized five large oral health models to demonstrate proper toothbrushing and flossing techniques, providing hands-on education about oral anatomy. The PA students gained practical experience by applying their knowledge from the Cavity Free Kids Classroom curriculum while supporting the local community.

Abigail Allen HeadshotWhen reflecting on the grant win, Abigail stated "As a PA educator, this oral health community outreach project aligns with my goal of giving back to both the community and the university. It provides an opportunity to work alongside my students as they educate local youth on the importance of oral health. Additionally, it allows me
to further students' understanding of oral health and teach them how to deliver effective patient education."

Congratulations to Abigail Allen, DMSc, PA-C, and the University of Findlay PA students for positively impacting the community and being recognized for the effort with a Be The Change grant!
